Reckless driving of Child Protection Officer causes serious injury to minor in Darrang
A ten-year-old minor boy sustained severe injury in a road accident caused due to reckless driving
MANGALDAI: A ten-year-old minor boy sustained severe injury in a road accident caused due to reckless driving of none but a District Child Protection Officer on NH 15 at 2.40 pm at Bijulibari village under Sipajhar Police Station in Darrang district on December 9.
According to police, a speeding Creta car (registration number AS 01 EW 6198) while moving towards Guwahati knocked down one Nibir Bora (10) and his paternal aunt Aruna Bora (54). The driver of the car totally lost his control over the speeding car and directly hit on a roadside tree causing major damage to the car.
On seeing the accident, people of the locality and Officer in Charge of Sipajhar Police Station Inspector Niranjan Barua immediately rushed to the spot and shifted critically injured minor boy and his aunt to Sipajhar CHC.
The police also recovered the injured driver of the car later identified as the Child Development Project Officer (CDPO) cum officiating District Child Protection Officer Manjit Das and co passenger identified as Protection Officer, Institutional Care of District Child Protection Unit Pallabi Sarma and also shifted both to Sipajhar PHC and all the four injured persons were referred to Guwahati Medical College Hospital.
Significantly the police recovered bottles of alcoholic drinks from the ill-fated car owned by the officiating District Child Protection Officer Manjit Das. The people of the locality who extended a helping hand for the rescue of the injured persons alleged that the officiating District Child Protection Officer was in an inebriated state which might be the possible cause of the road accident.
However, neither the district administration nor the District Social Welfare department have any information on the movement of both the officials that too during the office hours.
