SILCHAR: Good news poured in from Silchar Medical College and Hospital as the much awaited cathlab in the premier institute got started. From now onwards, both angiogram and angiography would be done in SMCH. Amid much demand, the cathlab was set up in SMCH but it could not be operational as there was no regular cardio surgeon in the department. A visiting cardiologist from Chennai used to treat patients in the SMCH in regular intervals. But without a permanent cardio surgeon the Cathlab could not be fully operational. Dr Tirthankar Roy, a cardio surgeon had recently joined SMCH and at last the cathlab got functional in the one and only medical college in the southern Assam. Dr Babul Bezbaruah, principal of SMCH informed that from now angiography would be done every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. A few more doctors with DM qualifications would join the cardiology department, he added. Process of appointing noted cardiologist Dr Raj Kumar Bhattacharjee was almost in final stage in Dispur and he would join very soon. SMCH authority would approach the government to start DM course in the cardiology department within next two years, Dr. Bezbaruah added. Further proposal for arranging technical training would also be sent to the higher authorities next year.
Meanwhile, the neuro surgery practice had been running in full swing in SMCH. The 55 year old premier institute had no neuro surgery department till last year. In October 2021, Dr. Sambuddha Dhar from Lucknow joined here and in last one year 130 cases of neuro surgery were performed.
On the other hand, the sophisticated cancer hospital would be operational in March 2023. Work for radiotherapy block was complete. Further primary drone survey for the proposed super specialty hospital had been done recently and sample of soil had been sent to Guwahati for test.
