MANGALDAI: A renowned cultural activist of the State, Dr Mrinal Choudhury, who was also the president of premier cultural organization 'Yuva Teertha' and a poet, lyricist, medical entrepreneur and a resident of Ward no. 1, is no more. Dr. Choudhury, a well-known name in the cultural sphere of the State, breathed his last at the Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hopital in Mumbai in the early hours of Wednesday. He was undergoing treatment there for the last few months. He was 67.

Born to mouzadar Ananta Chandra Choudhury and Dharmee Priya Choudhury of Chapai, Mangaldai, Dr Choudhury completed his MBBS. Instead of choosing government service, he started Poly Clinic nursing home here with two of his doctor friends. In his college days when he was associated with the YuvaBaniprogramme in Akashvani, Guwahati as an announcer, he came in close contact with many cultural legends of the State and started working for preservation and popularizing of folk culture. He was also a poet and lyricist. His poetic talent was also praised by former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee when the latter attended a poet meet in Guwahati in the early 90s. He has several collection of poems to his credit.

Since 2001, he was the key person to organize workshops on 'Bon Geet', an already extinct Assamese lullaby in different places of Assam. He was also an office bearer of the Indian Medical Association, Assam chapter for many years He is survived by his wife and three daughters. His untimely demise has cast a pall of gloom among the culture and literature-loving people of the State. His mortal remains are likely to be flown back his native town on Thursday, said family sources.
