A tribute to Retired DSP Deba Ranjan Sarma

Retired Deputy Superintendent of Police, Deba Ranjan Sarma is no more. Deba Ranjan was a courageous yet humble ‘man in Khaki’, decorated with devotion, commitment, and integrity to the land he lived and the people he served. At the same time, he was loyal to his department and very tough on criminals and anti-social elements. He left for heavenly abode on October 31 at his own residence at Jakhalabondha in Nagaon district.

Born at village Baligaon in Jorhat district in 1957 to the family of Upendra Nath Sarma, Administrative Officer of Assam Agriculture University and Renu Devi, Sarma passed the HSLC examination from Baligaon Jagannath Barua Arya Vidyalaya and completed his graduation from CKB Commerce College in 1981.

He joined Assam Police in 1984 as a Sub-Inspector. After successful completion of training and passing out from Police Training College (PTC), Dergaon in Golaghat district, he started his career as an attached Sub-Inspector at Golaghat PS. In his initial period in service, he was awarded a medal by the then Chief Minister for his outstanding service. He rendered his service in different police stations of the State, namely Dergaon, Geleki, Halowating, Bokota-Nemuguri, Gaurisagar, Mathurapur, Morajar, Bordowa, Dibrugarh, and Sibasagar as the Officer-in-charge.

On February 25, 1992, he tied the nuptial knot with Minakshi Sarma of Dergaon.

With his promotion as Inspector, he rendered his service as a Law Instructor at the PTC for quite a long tenure of five years. He was well acquainted with the police manual, rules, and laws related to the police, besides the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC) and general knowledge. He was promoted as Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) in 2013. Though he joined Darrang district as the Deputy Superintendent of Police in Border wing, later he was posted as the Deputy Superintendent of Police (HQ) till his retirement in 2018. Earlier on October 1, 2009, he was conferred a special award for his Police Public Relations by the Director-General of Police. He was also a known name in football and volleyball and played for the Assam Police Volleyball team. He leaves behind his wife, sons Dr. Samudra Dev Sarma and Sunav Dev Sarma, two brothers and three sisters.

On this auspicious day of his adya shraddha, I pray before the Almighty to grant eternal peace to the departed pious soul and also share the grief and pain of his family members. Om Shanti
