Rhino Poacher Killed in Orang National Park

MANGALDAI: An unidentified Rhino poacher was killed in Orang National Park (ONP) in the wee hours of Saturday. According to information, on the basis of a specific input regarding attempt by an organized armed gang of rhino poachers to enter the park, a joint operation between police and forest officials was planned and accordingly executed on Friday night led by in charge of Silbori Police Outpost, Sub-Inspector NA Choudhury.

At around 3.15 am on Saturday, a suspected poacher group was confronted at Bilpar camp area within the park. On being asked to stop, the group immediately started firing and on retaliation the suspected poachers’ group was also fired upon by the police-forest team. The cross firing lasted for around 25 minute.

At around 4.45 am, search operation was conducted and at about 5.35 am, an unidentified person with bullet injuries (along with a modified rifle with 5 rounds ammunition) was found lying within the reserve. He was immediately shifted to Kharupetia CHC for treatment where he was declared dead. Other members of the gang fled away taking advantage of darkness.
