Donkamukam: Diwali celebration in West Karbi Anglong was dampened due to the unexpected rise of the level of Kopili and Barpani rivers beyond the danger mark since Sunday morning.

Several hundred hectares of paddy and vegetable fields in West Karbi Anglong were immersed in water resulting in loss amounting to lakhs of rupees. Even jute stems immersed in some ponds were washed away by floodwater.

The worst affected areas were Rongkhang and Bithung Rengthama MAC constituencies. Nominated MAC of KAAC, Chandra Br Chetri and Ditolal Hasnu visited the affected areas on Sunday afternoon. Later, as per the direction of the KAAC CEM Tuliram Ronghang, relief materials were distributed to the worse-affected families of Barman gaon, Namtaradubi, Hatimura, Mugasong, Kollongamukh, Jalpara and Lalmati. The Hojai Tumpreng Donkamukam road remained cut off for the whole day on Sunday.
