SARUPATHAR: Several areas across Dhansiri subdivision in Golaghat district have been under the threat of flood and erosion from the Dhansiri River and its tributaries following the beginning of the rainy season this year. Soil erosion in different parts of the subdivision, including Chungajan, Naojan, Koirigaon, and Deopani Parghat, has taken a serious turn as several bighas of land, houses, trees, and plants have already been lost due to erosion across Dhansiri subdivision in the last few days.

Meanwhile, according to the report, the Water Resources Department has not yet constructed the embankment of Dhansiri River in the subdivision. Sarupathar area under Golaghat district has been hit by large-scale erosion of the Dhansiri River. Similarly, the villages under Chungajan, Naojan, and Deopani Parghat are recently under the serious threat of erosion from the Dhansiri River. Similarly, in various parts of the subdivision, hundreds of bighas of agricultural land have been inundated by water. The floods follow incessant rainfall during the last week of October, which has led to a sharp increase in the level of water in rivers. The water level of several rivers is still above the danger mark.

Incessant rainfall has caused an artificial flood in Dhansiri subdivision. The flood victims of Dhansiri subdivision alleged that the Water Resources Department has still not taken any steps to tackle the erosion and flood problems of the subdivision. “State Water Resources Minister Keshab Mahanta has seemingly turned a blind eye towards the suffering of the people of the area while all the representations and appeals before various authorities have fallen on deaf ears,” said a victim from a flood-affected area. The flood-affected people have urged the Water Resources Minister to construct river embankment to ensure safety during floods.
