TEZPUR: The Secretary of the Government of Assam, Labour Welfare department, Mridul Kumar Mahanta reviewed the status of the present COVID situation and medical facilities, housing facilities, education and water supply in tea estates of Sonitpur district at a meeting held at the conference hall of the Assistant Labour Commissioner's office in Tezpur here on Friday.

Present in the meeting were MIP, Dr Pradip Kumar Lahkar, Assistant Labour Commissioner, Rupali Pegu, senior journalist, Dip Kumar Kalita, chairman and secretary of ITA & ABITA, managers of tea estates and others officials.

Secretary Mridul Mahanta expressed his satisfaction for their cooperation during the COVID–19 situation and advised the managers to continue in the same effort to prevent further escalation of COVID and the communicable diseases. He also requested the Garden Managers to extent the cooperation to implement different schems of the Labour Welfare Department for the workers like BOCW, PM Shram Yogi Mandhan Yojana, ESIC, PF.

Attending the meeting, Dr P K Lahkar laid stress on appointing qualified medical practitioners in tea garden hospitals. Lahkar also advised the management to verify the documents of all medical practitioners before appointing them in garden hospitals to prevent appointment of fake doctors. He also advised the garden authority to fill all the vacant medical and paramedical staff in tea garden hospitals immediately and arrange proper transport facilities (ambulance to carry serious patients).

The chairman of ABITA requested the Secretary to take initiative for reimbursement of the COVID benefits for the workers and also requested to recognize tea garden hospitals as rural health training centres which will enable MBBS doctors to serve in garden hospitals. The tea garden management also expressed their satisfaction for the guidance of Dr PK Lahkar and his initiative taken in suppyling free medicines and arranging awareness in the gardens with the help of District Health Society and the district administration.

Earlier, Assistant Labour Commissioner, Rupali Pegu gave a current scenario of housing, hospital and education facility in tea gardens of Sonitpur and Biswanath districts.
