MANGALDAI: Altogether seven important posts of officers in the district education department, including the Inspector of Schools (IS), District Elementary Education Officer (DEEO), District Mission Coordinator (DMC), SSA and District Adult Education Officer, are lying vacant.

In addition to these officials, the post of Deputy Inspector (DI) of Schools, Mangaldai and Block Elementary Education Officers (BEEO) of Dalgaon and Sipajhar Education Block have reportedly been running without regular officers. Till a few days back, Rini Hazarika- an Assistant Commissioner in the Deputy Commissioner's office and Executive Officer, Mangaldai Municipal Board, had been in charge of all the said district heads since the month of February in lieu of the ailing Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC) in charge of the education department in the district.

In addition to the district heads, she was also in charge of the Principals of altogether five secondary level schools. The Additional Deputy Commissioner is also in charge of two other major departments such as Health and Social Welfare, apart from being the Nodal Officer of the mega drinking water project, Jal Jeevan Mission.

Talking to this correspondent, Pawan Kr Jha, the president of the District Primary Teachers' Association, said that the long absence of the regular officers in these offices has adversely affected the overall academic environment due to a lack of requisite communication between the teachers' community and the officers concerned, though he observed that the cooperation from the outgoing officer Rini Hazarika was good in spite of her busy administrative schedule.

Similarly, Dipen Rajbongshi, an office-bearer of the District Academic Council, has observed that due to the absence of a regular Inspector of Schools, the meeting of the Academic Council could not be held for long since it is almost impossible for a senior administrative officer to spare time for such issues. Moreover, the regular inspection of schools has also suffered a major setback in the last few months. In the last one year, at least three posts of the district heads are lying vacant on a regular basis whereas the post of DI is lying vacant for the last five years.
