Speeding vehicle knocks down two-morning Walkers

Our Correspondent

MANGALDAI: Due to the alleged indifferent attitude and negligence of the Transport department in Darrang in controlling unruly truck and dumper drivers, two-morning walkers lost their lives on Thursday morning as a speeding goods-carrying commercial vehicle ran over them.

The tragic accident took place at the village Adhamapara on MB Road near Mangaldai town. Another morning walker sustained a critical injury in the accident. The deceased have been identified as Kiran Devi and Suren Saharia of the same locality while critically injured Manjula Devi is struggling for life in GMCH.

With the recent enforcement of the amended Motor Vehicle Act, the Transport department in the district has allegedly failed to tame or control the unruly drivers of the goods-carrying commercial vehicles. Most of the drivers drive these vehicles at a high speed, that too without any valid license. Similarly, the Enforcement Wing of the Transport department has also allegedly failed to check the overloading, fitness certificate, pollution certificate, permit and valid insurance of these vehicles.
