Stolen Swift Dzire Recovered, Four Arrested In East Karbi Anglong

Bokajan: In a major crackdown, the Dillai Police foiled a bid to smuggle a stolen Maruti Swift Dzire car in a routine check post over NH-36 along the Assam-Nagaland border in East Karbi Anglong.

As reported, the police personnel attached to the check post intercepted the vehicle heading towards Dimapur in Nagaland for regular inspection as the number plate seemed dubious. On cross verifying, it was found that the documents were doctored and the registration number had been tempered. Later, it was known that the vehicle had been lifted from Jaipur in Rajasthan and was bound for sale in Dimapur. Three persons – Ghanashyam Tanwar, Jaiprakash Paswan, Sunil Kr Paswan – were arrested.

Meanwhile, based on the revelations of the arrested trio, the police laid a trap in the Purna Lahorijan area of Assam-Nagaland inter-State border and successfully arrested the fourth accomplice, Jiten Kr Bhagat who came to receive the vehicle for onward sale into Nagaland. The fifth offender, who was supposed to buy the vehicle for Rs 2 lakh, is still at large.

“The prime accused Ghanashyam Tanwar of Rajasthan is a cab driver by profession and has frequented the roads of the Northeast. He reportedly met the fourth offender, Jiten Kr Bhagat at a hotel in Jaipur, Rajasthan, who also happens to be a lorry driver by profession. The duo accordingly hatched plans to make some quick money in the inter-State car-jacking trade taking advantage of the poor cross-border crime combating machinery,” the investigating officer said.
