Strictest action demanded for killers of mentally challenged woman

Haflong, June 13: Several organizations like Ladies Welfare Society, Dimasa Mothers Association, Blue Hills Society, AROH and others demanded stern action against the killers of a mentally challenged woman of New Tumbung village under Umrangso Police station, at a press conference held at Ladies Welfare Society on Wednesday.

Uma Sarma (45) wife of Bishma Sarma of New Tumbung village under Umrangso Police Station was a mentally challenged woman missing since June 8. An FIR was also lodged at Umrangso police station as well as Panimoor outpost but the police failed to find out the missing woman following which the residents of New Tumbung initiated a search operation along with the police that led to the recovery of her body in a gorge near Panimoor. The signs of the body claimed that the lady was brutally tortured and killed due to which a sense of tension began to prevail in and around that area.

All the speakers, while condemning the heinous crime meted out to the mentally challenged woman, expressed solidarity with the victim and flayed the indifferent attitude of the administration as well police administration. They also warned that if the administration failed to deliver justice to the victim of such brutality, they would not remain silent and requested all concerned not to use any instigating remarks.

Meanwhile, following pressure from the public the police apprehended Bikas Sangma (32), son of Satyen Marak, Raja Sangma (18), son of Biren Marak, and Buoy Marak (44), son of Lal Bahadur Thapa of Pathor Quiry Garo Basti.
