Suspected poachers arrested along Assam-Nagaland border in East Karbi Anglong, Arms Seized

Bokajan: In a major development, a gang of suspected poachers have been arrested from Purna Lahorijan area along Assam-Nagaland border in East Karbi Anglong on Friday.

As reported, the gang of four suspected poachers reportedly travelling in a Maruti Alto car which was intercepted for regular check in the interstate police check post at Purna Lahorijan under Dillai Police station. On frisking the vehicle, police have recovered one '22 caliber rifle with 80 live ammunition, 20 rounds ammunition of 12 bore Rifle, crackers, 3 torch light and several mobile phones from their possession.

A preliminary investigation conducted by Dillai Police suggests poaching as the prime motive behind the possession of the seized rifle.

The arrested have been identified as Binod Basumatary, Akhta Tesso, Sochet Hom and Akhpa. All are resident of Dimapur and had reportedly come off a hunting spree in Karbi Anglong forest.

Earlier on June 17, 2019, based on secret input, Bokakhat police apprehended two rhino poachers from Hiljuri area located near the Kaziranga National Park.

A Police team led by Officer in charge of Bokakhat Police Station, Deben Bora launched a secret operation at Hiljuri area and apprehended Binod Karmakar and Krishna Karmakar.

Police during their raid also recovered one 303 rifles, one magazine, 7 live ammunition, one silencer from their possession.

Police also informed that both Binod and Krishna were planning to hunt a rhino from the Kaziranga National Park (KNP).

It is to be noted that Krishna Karmakar hails from Bamun Gaon, Kuthori under Nagaon District and Binod Karmakar from Hiljuri near Kaziranga National Park.

Police also suspects the involvement of a few more people in connection to Rhino Poaching in the area. The entire area has been cordoned, informed the police.
