Tangla-Mahaliapara road: Poor work alleged

A Correspondent

TANGLA: At a time when the State PWD ministry has witnessed a bold new face, and the State government has boasted of adopting a zero-tolerance policy against corruption, the construction work of Tangla-Mahaliapara road has reported gross negligence on the poor quality of works as the blacktopping on the road have started deteriorating.

The foundation stone of the road was laid on June 2, 2018 by Sipajhar legislator Binanda Kumar Saikia in presence of Kalaigaon MLA, Maheswar Baro and PWD officials. The road which falls partly in Darrang and Udalguri district was lying in dilapidated condition for nearly a decade. Locals heaved a sigh of relief following the sanction of the repairing of the road at a stretch of 4.20 kms under SOPD(G) 2017-18 at an estimated amount of 1 crore.

But contrary to keeping upto people’s aspirations, the contractor allegedly in the unholy nexus of PWD officials has ignored the quality part largely, resulting in poor construction of roads. The aggrieved locals have strongly voiced the poor quality work and demanded an inquiry into the matter. Residents of the area on anonymity showing the damaged portions of the road expressed strong resentment and blamed the State government for giving free hand to such construction companies. A senior citizen of the area said, “We protested for nearly a decade to draw the attention of the government but didn’t expect such misconduct by the contractor. It is a sheer misappropriation and loot of public money.” Various local organizations have demanded high-level inquiry into the matter and blacklisting of the construction company.
