Three Convicted in 2009 Murder Incident in Lanka

Hojai: A fast track court in Hojai today convicted three persons with life imprisonments in connection with a murder case.

The three convicted persons are Habijur Rahman, Saidur Rahman and Sahidur Rahman under section 302 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). The court has also slapped a fine of Rs 10,000 each to the three convicts.

It is to be noted that in 2009, one Habibur Rahman of Kaki in Lanka was killed at his residence by nine persons following a land dispute, informed public prosecutor Amarjyoti Saikia.

On the other hand, the fast track court had acquitted five due to lack of proof.

Public Prosecutor Amarjyoti Saikia also informed that the prime accused in the murder incident identified as Mukutu Rahman was killed six months back and a case has also been registered in connection to the incident.

Section 302 in The Indian Penal Code

As per section 302 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), whoever commits murder shall be punished with death, or 1[imprisonment for life], and shall also be liable to fine.

It may also be mentioned that the national conviction rate in India for offenses of the Indian Penal Code is around 46%. This tends to vary state by state. The state with the highest conviction rate is Kerala, at about 84%, while the one with the lowest rate in Bihar, at around 10%.

Throughout 2016, the national conviction rate of Indian Penal Code crimes is 46.8%, with 596,078 convicted and 678,270 acquitted/discharged, and also 1,060,724 Convicted under SLL crimes and 226,546 Acquitted or discharged, make conviction rate 82.4% under SLL crimes, making a combined conviction rate 64.67% in India during 2016.
