TINSUKIA, May 16: Three persons accused of gang rape were convicted under section 376 (D) of IPC and were sentenced to life imprisonment by the Session Court, Tinsukia on May 14. Pronouncing the judgement, Judge P J Saikia said the offences were proved against all the three accused, Ranjit Tanti, Khagen Tanti and Jiskel Murah, beyond all reasonable doubts and sentenced them to undergo rigorous imprisonment for life and also sentenced them to pay a fine of Rs 50,000 each and in default of the payment of fine, each convict will have to undergo another period of imprisonment of one year. He further directed the District Legal Service Authority to pay adequate compensation to the victim.

According to the case registered in April, 2017 at Bordubi Police Station under Tinsukia district, when the victim was feeling unwell, her husband took her to three quacks- Ranjit Tanti, Khogen Tanti and Jiskel Murah -who told the husband to take her to the riverbank. The husband collected some items like liquor and fruits to be required for rituals. The three accused took his wife to the river bank asking her husband not to come near the riverbank. The perpetrators fixed the fingers of the woman to the ground by using some metallic clamp and raped her one by one. The accused, after committing the crime, brought her back home. The victim reported the matter to her aunt and husband and the latter lodged an FIR the next morning, following which the victim was subjected to medical examination and further investigation leading to conviction.
