Tribute paid to 140 martyred farmers on Krishak Swahid Divas in Mangaldai

MANGALDAI: ‘Gone But Not Forgotten, Never shall Thy Memory Fade; Oh Martyrs, We Salute You. Historians may have forgotten you, but History not’. Bringing these immemorial lines into the reality, the Unit of Red Horns Division of the Indian Army deployed at Chapai in Darrang district, in their unique homage paying ceremony in memory of the 140 Krishak Swahids who were brutally gunned down by the British during the historic peasants’ rebellion at Pothorughat in Darrang district on January 28, 1894, on Wednesday offered their deep salutation and floral homage at the Krishad Swahid Memorial at Patharighat.

Commander of the ‘Invictus Brigade’ took part in the homage paying function as the chief guest and offered floral tribute in full military-style and honour. He also offered felicitation to the Veer Naaris, family members of Krishak Swahids and freedom fighters. Recalling the famous slogan of ‘Jai Jawan, Jai Kishan’ the Commander also felicitated young and reputed agri-entrepreneur Dhruba Jyoti Saikia to mark the ‘Krishak Divas’ celebration. The

students of JNV, Darrang with two patriotic musical performances added more color to the function.

“The historic peasants’ rebellion at Pothorughat 126 years back is a glaring example of courage, valour, and patriotism of our countrymen as the village farmers of all communities got united to revolt against the British administration and those unsung 140 Krishak

Swahids galvanized the freedom movement against the British rulers from this rural area of Darrang. The young generation should realize the supreme sacrifice offered by these great Krishak Swahids so that we can protect and honour the sovereignty of our motherland,” said

Commander of the Invictus Brigade while addressing the function. Media person Bhargab Kumar Das also addressed the ‘Krishak Swahid Divas’ celebration organized by the Army.

A large gathering of around 1,000 people, including ex-servicemen and their family members, family members of Krishak Swahids and freedom fighters also attended the function. The Army has been celebrating the Krishak Swahid Divas in full military honour

since 2001 at the initiative of the then Governor of Assam, Lt Gen SK Sinha.
