TINSUKIA: A two-day workshop on Solid Waste Management, organized by Tinsukia Municipal Board, concluded on Saturday.

Prof Ajay Kalamdhad of IIT Guwahati acted as a key resource person. Prof Kalamdhad dwelt at length on SWM and its challenges in the Northeast and Assam in particular, emphasizing bio-mining of old dumpsite and technologies involved. Referring to the Tinsukia scenario, he observed that the garbage dump yard at Tingrai needed immediate reclamation of land as leachate from the garbage over the years had extensively contaminated groundwater source and was leading to potential human hazards. The other IIT team members- Dr. Jayeeta Hazarika, Venketesh Reddy, Bhaskar Buragohain also interacted and spoke on rules and regulations governing SWM in India while Reddy presented a DPR.

Prasanta Gogoi, the executive officer of TMB, presented a vivid picture of the ongoing garbage disposal scheme in Tinsukia. He said that the segregation of waste at source was the foundation of SWM without which no management plan would be successful. As bio-mining was the core issue, initial thrust would be laid on elaborate planning on segregation and dumping and concurrently to explore suitable funding for bio-mining. Municipal officials from Digboi and Makum attended the workshop. The workshop concluded with views and suggestions from experts and participants.
