UDALGURI: The Udalguri district Farmers’ Cooperative Society Ltd has resented the fact that political parties do not raise the issues of farmers. Abinash Daimari, the president of Udalguri Farmers’ Cooperative Society, said that the labour of farmers was never acknowledged and proper due was never given to farmers. As a result, they are not able to meet the financial demands that the modern world imposes.
“Government schemes never reach the needy nor are the schemes region-specific. The problems faced by farmers in the locality are lack of crop insurance, lack of proper training to the farmers, unavailability of farm machineries, proper irrigation facilities and agricultural electrification. The cold storage established near Lalpool is non-functional. The farmers need seed corporation and horticulture departments in each BTAD district,” he said.
The farmers also cited the need of establishment of banana waste material recycling units in the region. Dhiraj Das, the marketing secretary, and Modon Basumatary, the adviser of Udalguri Farmers’ Cooperative Society, raised the issues of establishment of food processing units, promoting organic agricultural practices, establishment of bio-flock project at village-level and establishment of piggery and goatery breeding farms. The problems faced by farmers are never raised by political parties during election time, they lamented.
