Udalguri chapter ABMSU seeks release of ‘foreigner’ declared couple

TANGLA: Echoing the plight of the genuine Bengali Muslim people of the State who are allegedly being harassed and hounded in name of D-voters issue, the All BTC Minority Students’ Union (ABMSU) has claimed that there have been a spate of incidents where genuine citizens, more particularly the poverty-stricken people of the Bengali Muslim community, are being framed and tried as foreigners by the Border Police and Foreigners Tribunal with the sole motive of harassing and hounding the genuine citizens. This was stated in a press communiqué by the president and secretary of Udalguri chapter, ABMSU, Jiarul Haque and Abul Kalam Azad.

Raising strong objection over the case where a couple - Nur Hussain and Sahara Begum, inhabitants of Lawdang village under Udalguri PS in the district, was declared foreigner by the Foreigners Tribunal on the basis of reports of the Border Police which were allegedly of mala fide intention and ex-parte declaration, the students’ body said that both of them were genuine citizens and had enough documents to prove their citizenship. Nur Hussain’s father’s name also figures in the Legacy Data of 1951and Nur Hussain had all the other documents to establish his linkage, including Voter ID card, job card, ration card and PAN card.

Raising concern over such incidents where genuine citizens are forcefully declared citizens to make them languish over years in detention camps in inhumane condition, only to be later declared as citizens by the High Court and Supreme Court, the students’ body exhorted the government agencies to stop such unwarranted harassment of genuine citizens.

They further lamented that such harassment of the religious minorities were only efforts of appeasement the governments at Dispur and Delhi. The students’ body also exhorted the government to intervene in the matter for immediate release of Nur Hussain and Sahara Begum who are lodged in a detention camp, allegedly with their children, failing which the students’ body would be forced to hit the streets against the detrimental policies and hypocrisy of the government and Border Police.
