Violent thunderstorm swept Sarupathar on Friday evening

Sarupathar: Violent thunderstorm hits Sarupathar destroying houses and other establishments, thus paralyzing the normal life all of a sudden on Friday evening at around 7.20 pm. The violent storm also brought down power lines in the entire region, informed the Meteorological Department.

Speaking to the media, one of the victims of the storm said, "The storm destroyed everything in its path. Every other house in the area have been left with no rooftops, trees have fallen down, there is no power supply in the entire area, life has come to standstill."

It is to be noted that the strong storm along with the heavy rain on Friday night wreaked havoc in entire Dhansiri Subdivision area, where a large number of electricity poles were damaged. People have been facing long power outages.

According to the officials, the cyclonic storm had damaged hundreds of houses and other establishments. Road connectivity on the outskirts of Dhansiri Sub-Division was blocked for several hours. The power supply is interrupted till Saturday evening.

On the other hand, the Electricity Department carried out their normal work to bring the situation under control in the area.

Meanwhile, local people showed their concern over the strong room in the Sarupathar college where the electronic voting machines (EVMs) are being stored after the Lok Sabha election in Assam.

It may be mentioned that as per local Meteorological Department weather forecast there will be cloudy sky with one or two spells of rain or thundershowers in the coming week.

As predicted by Skymet, scattered rains have commenced over many parts of northeastern states from April 26, 2019 onwards. Many Northeast states including that of Meghalaya, Assam and Tripura are reporting light to moderate rainfall activity.
