Writer Bukul Chandra Basumatary battling with cancer

Kokrajhar, May 19: Renowned writer Bukul Chandra Basumatary, who is also the retired legal advisor, Reserve Bank of India, Regional Director of National Housing Board and advocate of Mumbai High Court, is battling with cancer since the last one year.

Basumatary is undergoing treatment at Kokilaben Hospital, Mumbai. He expressed his desire for help from the Government of Assam and BTC if there is any provision to provide financial assistance to writers for advanced medical treatment.

Basumatary has 12 books to his credit, including Geeta - translation in Bodo, treatise /deals with various issues relating to definitions of Kamarupa and Pragjyotishpur. It also deals with the evolution of the Bodos with Hinduism and conversion of Bodos into Islam in East Bengal,Shakuntala, a translation of Shakuntalam of Kalidas, Bodo Civilization in India, A Concise History of the Bodos, A Treatise on the Bodos, Why a Bodoland, Bodos are the ancestors of modern Indians, which is under print, and Boroni Jarimin, which is about the ancient history of Assam.

"Since the last one year I have not been able to write due to my ill health. I have two more books to be published - Nwng Mithigou and Na Angnw Mithirwnggou. If any publisher wishes to publish my books, I am ready to give the same for publication," Basumatary said

He urged the upcoming young writers to work hard and contribute to the society, State and nation.

Basumatary, as a student was an active leader and a pro-active social reformer. He made efforts to reform the Bodo society by holding periodical conferences, meetings and discussions with the Bodos, particularly those living in villages and small towns. His prime objective was to make them give up excessive drinking and blind beliefs, and to promote education and ideas of reformation.

He contributed thousands of articles on various topics in several journals. He said that the Mumbai Bodo Society (MBS) was doing voluntary social work and helping cancer patients and students who come to Mumbai. Basumatary said that the MBS had been urging BTC chief Hagrama Mohilary to build a Bodoland Guest House in Mumbai like in Kolkata, Delhi and Siliguri.
