Cachar gears up for Panchayat elections

Silchar: The district administration of Cachar is all set to conduct the 2nd phase of Panchayat elections on December 9, amidst tight security with special arrangements. Polling will be held at 1659 polling booths of Cachar district and 9975 polling staff will be deployed for smooth conduction of it. Of the 162 Gaon Panchayats, 1659 polling stations have been earmarked for the purpose. 733 polling teams for covering 12 Zila Parishads and 926 polling teams for covering 15 Zila Parishads will leave for their respective booths on December 7 and December 8 respectively. Polling will start from 7 am and conclude at 3 pm.

The teams will leave on the same day. Around 10,55,000 voters will cast their votes. 96 Sector Officers, Civil Sector Officers have been deployed for the purpose. This information was shared by Dr S Lakshmanan, Deputy Commissioner of Cachar and Rakesh Roushan, Superintendent of Cachar, at press-meet held on Tuesday evening at the conference hall of the office of the Deputy Commissioner of Cachar. “If everything goes off well, then there is no need of a re-poll. However, if needed, it will be conducted on December 11. Counting in 14 counting halls, 6 in ISBT and 8 in ISTT, will be conducted on December 12. Around 1500 people have been engaged in the poll election,” said DC Cachar.

SP Cachar said, “Sufficient forces have been deployed. Every polling station, which is 1167 in number, will have an unarmed constable, a home guard and three VDP members. Armed and paramilitary forces will not be inside the premises of any polling station. We are also keeping vigilant eyes on the border areas.” December 7 and December 8 have been also declared as dry days. Ranadeep Dam said that there would be 43 picking points for picking up the polling staff and 5 shuttle services would be provided.
