Drug abuse taking a menacing shape in Katigorah, Silchar

Special Correspondent

Silchar: When the state and different social bodies worried at the increasing menace of drug abuse are carrying on campaign for eradication of the evil from society, youths under various instigating circumstances are being lured to the addiction.

This kind of phenomenon has created a sense of panic among the peace loving people of west Katigorah, bordering Bangladesh. Deeply concerned, a social body under the banner of ‘Paschim Katigorah Jagaran Mancha’ has come out with a drive and mission to create awareness among the youths in particular against the disastrous effects of drug and narcotic consumption.

Sunit Baishnab, president of the Mancha, said the youths are being cautioned against the awful effects of narcotic drugs, liquor, gambling and other social vices. These evil practices cannot but tear apart the socio-moral-ethical edifice of a healthy society. The NGO in the meantime has organized some awareness programmes with the active participation of responsible and responsive citizens of the greater Gumrah bazaar areas. Though there has been wide appreciation from conscious people, those engaged in drug addiction and other vices have united to play an adverse role to frustrate the noble mission of the NGO and spoil their good work and good will.

Jashim Uddin Barbhuiya, a member of the NGO, said drug addiction is mainly confined to youths of well to do families. Elderly persons of the families are mostly ignorant of the activities of their youths. The NGO has sought the help of all cultured and conscious citizens, besides from police and local administration. The joint action against all those who promote and encourage drug addiction and other social vices alone can break the backbone of these anti social elements. The NGO plans to organize more awareness programmes and commits to carry on till the menace is completely routed out from their areas.
