Hailakandi: The Hailakandi district administration has intensified efforts to scotch rumours on the upcoming Measles Rubella (MR) vaccination campaign to make it a success in the district. The MR vaccination campaign begins on August 17.

Following reports emanating from interior and far flung areas mostly inhabited by minority communities that the vaccination is an attempt to control the fast growing population of the minority communities by making them incapable of reproduction, the administration is making all out efforts to convince the people.

Awareness meetings are being conducted by the district administration in association with the health and education departments to drive home the message that the MR vaccine is highly safe and effective in controlling Measles and Rubella viruses. Taking part in such an awareness meeting at Ahoroho private school at Mohonpur under Algapur revenue circle, District Development Commissioner FR Laskar made a fervent plea to the people mostly minority communities not to fall prey to rumours that the MR vaccine is a bid to control birth rate by rendering them infertile or impotent.

Laskar tried to prevail upon the people to participate in the vaccination drive in a big way and make the aspirational district free from Measles and Rubella diseases. He cited instances how the life expectancy of the people of the country has gone up from below 50s for both male and female in 70s to over 80 for female and 79 for male presently due to rapid advancement of medical science resulting in containing many diseases.
