Indo-Bangladesh Meet Held in Silchar

Silchar: A DC-DM level meeting (cluster 7) between the bordering districts of India and Bangladesh was held at the conference hall of Deputy Commissioner of Cachar here on Monday. The 17-member delegates from Bangladesh were headed by Nazia Shirin, Deputy Commissioner and District Magistrate of Moulvi Bazaar, M Kazi Emdadul Islam, Deputy Commissioner, Sylhet, Mhd. Shajalal, Superintendent of Police, Moulvi Bazar, Additional Superintendent of Police, Sylhet, Lt. Col. Sayed Hussain, Director of 19 BGB.

The Indian delegation was led by M S Manivannan, Deputy Commissioner, Karimganj which also included Laya Madduri, Deputy Commissioner, Cachar, Mugdhajyoti Dev Mahanta, Superintendent of Police, Cachar, Manabendra Devroy, Superintendent of Police, Karimganj, and commandants of 131 Bn, 7 Bn, 134 Bn of BSF. At the high-level meeting, many serious issues such as cross border infiltration, cross border smuggling, human trafficking, fake currency were deliberated upon. Both the teams agreed amicably for combined effort to deal with these problems.

Mentioning about the historic role India played during Bangla Liberation War, Nazia Shirin, the team leader of delegates from Bangladesh, told that both India and Bangladesh are peace-loving, harmonious and friendly nations. The national anthem of both these nations was composed by Nobel Laureate Rabindranath Tagore. This kind of meeting would enhance the bilateral ties between these two bordering countries. The delegates from both sides also agreed to start bus service from Silchar to Sylhet and proposed to establish border-haat at several places in the border areas.

It was also decided in the meeting to arrange such events for the exchange of cultural and sports activities between the bordering districts to boost a bilateral relationship. It is pertinent to mention here that the delegation from Bangladesh arrived at Karimganj on Sunday last and participated in a cultural event organized at Banga Bhawan here on Sunday evening. The delegates from Bangladesh will return this evening.
