Hailakandi: Deputy Commissioner Keerthi Jalli inaugurated a district-level Swachhta Hi Seva under the Swachh Bharat Mission Gramin (SBM-G) programme here on Thursday.

Speaking at the programme held at Dr.Shashi Bhushan Institute of Education at Boalipar on the outskirts of Hailakandi town, DC Jalli urged all citizens not to make use of the single-use plastic and to discard it for their own well being and the environment as a whole. She drew people's attention to the ill-effects of single-use plastic on the environment and the health of animals.

The district administration has already banned use of single-use plastic and other plastic items of less than 50 microns in the entire district this year. The Deputy Commissioner also focussed on making the environment green and clean. The administration has embarked on afforestation drive across the district. Around 300 ornamental trees have been planted at the entrance of Hailakandi town close to the bypass.

Jalli along with officials of public health engineering and other concerned departments planted saplings on the occasion. Earlier, the Deputy Commissioner administered the swachhta pledge to the officials and swachhagrahis on the occasion.

The Swachhta Hi Seva 2019 theme is 'plastic waste awareness and management'. Swachhta Hi Seva is a massive nationwide awareness and mobilisation campaign on Swachhta (cleanliness). The Swachhta Hi Seva 2019 is being organized from September 11 till October 2. Prime Minister Narendra Modi had set the goal of making India open defecation free (ODF) by October 2, coinciding with the 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi under the SBM. It may be mentioned that Hailakandi district has already attained ODF status last year.
