NRC Update: Amidst all assurances tension persists at Silchar

Silchar, July 29: As the countdown for NRC draft publication has begun, assurances by the three district administrations of Cachar, Karimganj and Hailakandi and the mounting awareness campaign by official agencies and NGOs among general people not to panic, in all fairness, tension continues to persist in their minds. And quite naturally so in view of the apprehension that huge numbers of names might not find place in the list. People however are trying to keep their fingers crossed, waiting for all the positive signal.

The civil and police administration are not sitting idle and have flexed all available security precautions with police and security forces kept ready to beat any eventuality in the event of any untoward incident. In the meantime, all the sensitive and hyper sensitive areas in all the three districts have been identified on the basis of the records of the election office. Social media is being utilized by the administration to repeat the words of caution that the process of NRC update will continue till December 31, 2018.

Cachar DC S Lakshmanan and SP Rakesh Roushan have reached out to the media and people in general not to lose heart, but to avail of the opportunity for enlistment if left out from the draft. According to a police source, 12 companies of central security force have already reached for deployment. In any case, maintenance of peace is the prime concern of the administration. No genuine Indian citizen will be subjected to injustice. All grievances will be redressed when addressed. Field level administrative officers are monitoring the developments.

Besides, all sorts of intended and malicious rumour mongering and false propaganda will be sternly dealt with, warned the police administration. The district administration of Karimganj is also prepared to walk extra mile to maintain peace and tranquility and people in general have also to be cooperative. Left outs are assured they will not be sent to detention camp or served with foreigner’s notice. DC Pradip Kumar Talukdar and SP Gaurav Upadhaya have jointly prevailed over people to be cooperative with the administration. Not to take chances, 144 Crpc has been promulgated throughout the district bordering with Bangladesh, Tripura and Mizoram.

Among all the three districts, Hailakandi has been fast and swift to complete the second draft list well in advance and Deputy Commissioner Adil Khan has at the same time assured that every care has been taken to see that no bona fide Indian citizen is dropped from the list. A 40 year middle aged man was taken into custody from Mohanpur near the Hailakandi town for spreading rumour centering round NRC through Facebook. Trouble makers and rumour mongers have been cautioned to be cautious about their mischievous design to mislead and misguide people. Sufficient security forces have been kept ready, a senior police officer said.
