Silchar: ‘Swachhata Hi Seva’ campaign is going on in full swing here also. The district administration of Cachar in collaboration with Silchar Municipal Board (SMB) has taken up the task of cleaning the city of its garbage.

In a bid to make children aware of cleanliness, an art competition on ‘Swachhata’ organized by SMB was organized at Goldighi Municipal Mall on Sunday. Dr S Lakshmanan, Deputy Commissioner of Cachar, stressed on the need and importance of conduction cleanliness drives in both urban and rural areas of the district. “The art competition based on the theme of cleanliness will make children well aware of the importance of a neat and clean surrounding,” he said.

S Lakshmanan further said that the prize distribution ceremony of the competition would be held at a grand function to be held on the occasion of the 149th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi. “We are receiving endless support from PHE and education departments, SMB, general people, NGOs and various organizations. We need a clean city and Silchar is surely to rank among the top cleanest cities of the country. We are trying our best to manage wastes. Steps will be taken by SMB also. A cleanliness supervisor will be deployed for keeping watch on the important points, roads, places and junctions of the town. The supervisor will then submit a report to the SMB. We will also finish building the remaining toilets, say 3200, in rural areas by the end of this month,” he added.
