ASEBSC retain GSA Super League title

GUWAHATI: One more match still have to play but Assam State Electricity Board Sports Club (ASEBSC) today retained GSA RG Baruah Super Division Soccer League title with a 2-1 victory over AP Blues at the Nehru stadium here today.
ASEBSC, the most successful team in the history of Super Division League, collected their 11th titles today.
The side needed just a victory to retain the title and they did it in style. Assam Police Blues also had slender chance to win the league this season but for that they had to win both their last league game including today’s one and ASEBSC had to lose point in their last game against NFRSC. Although Police Blues played nice soccer in the match and came close to score on several occasions but were successful only once.
It was ASEBSC who scored first goal in 19th minute. Maneswar Musahary headed in nice a corner kick which was taken by Karma Narzary. John Sangte returned the goal in the 31 minutes and the score line read 1-1 in the lemon break. In the second half AP Blues mounted huge pressure on ASEBSC to earn lead and managed to reach very close to score. However all the opportunities were wasted.
ASEBSC got the winning goal in 68 minutes utilizing a counter attack. Akrang Narzary nicely placed the ball towards the right post and ball went into the goal hitting the post.
With today’s victory ASEBSC collected 21 points from their nine matches. AP Blues are at second spot with 15 points from same number of games.
Talking to The Sentinel just after the game Ganesh Rai, the coach of ASEBSC, said, “We didn’t want to keep it for the last match. We wanted to earn full three points from game to ensure the title. My players did it nicely. Entire credit of this success should go to my players who displayed nice performance throughout the tournament.”
He also added: “We have another match in the competition and our aim would be to remain undefeated in the competition.”
