GUWAHATI: Assam Archery Association today welcomed the decision of the Sports Ministry which allowed the National Centre of Excellence (Archery) to continue its function at LNIPE, Sonapur. Addressing a media gathering Ritubaran Sarma, a key official of the Assam Archery Association who is also the Vice President of the Assam Olympic Association, today said, earlier Sports Authority of India (SAI) suggested the sports ministry to withdraw the centre from Sonapur sighting lack of archers and also infrastructure of the game. However Assam Archery Association strongly opposed the decision as the game has good prospects in the State. They also appealed to the State Government to take appropriate steps in this regard.

Recently the matter was raised by former sports minister Bimal Borah in the Sports and Youth Welfare Ministers meeting which was recently held in Gujarat. Borah represented Assam in the meeting.

Later Sports Authority of India changed their earlier decision and now the centre will continue to function at LNIPE, Sonapur. The meeting was also attended by Vice President of the Assam Archery Association Pulin Saha.
