Joy Prakash Verma takes charge as Vice-Chancellor of Sports University

DIBRUGARH: With an aim to boost all round development of sporting activities in a scientific ways, the State Government has initiated steps to set up Sports University, first of its kind in the state at Chabua in Dibrugarh District vide The Assam Sri Sri Aniruddhadev Sports University Act, 2018. Professor Joy Prakash Verma took charge as the first Vice-Chancellor of the university on Thursday.

To felicitate the new Vice- Chancellor Prof. Verma, a felicitation ceremony was held in the conference hall of the Deputy Commissioners office here with Registrar of the Sri Sri Aniruddha Deva Sports University, cum Dibrugarh District Development Commissioner Sanjay Dutta in the chair. In his maiden speech as Vice-Chancellor of the Sports university, Prof. Verma thanked the state government for considering him eligible for coveted post and hoped to complete 90 percent of the infrastructure development of the university within the next three years. Referring his future plans and course of action, Prof. Verma stressed on knowledge creation and doing research in the field of sports, to identify new sports talents and harnessing their talents through scientific training, nurturing and grooming of budding talents from the age of seven years onwards and to motivate every section of people of the society to stay physically fit and active .

The office of the university will function from the second floor of Office of the District Industries and Commerce center here till the construction works of the university completed. The meeting was attended by MLAs of Chabua and Lahoal LAC Binod Hazarika and Rituparna Barua respectively, CEM of Sonowal Kachari Autonomous Council, Dipuranjan Markary and Secretay of Assam Olympic Association and Dibrugarh District Sports Association Niranjan Saikia, Joint Registrar(Administration), Dibrugarh University, Paramananda Sonowal, Additional Deputy Commissioner, Susanta Kumar Dutta and Dibrugarh Sports Officer, Dhrubajyoti Deka.

Both MLAs of Chabua and Lahowal while addressing the meeting lauded the efforts of the Chief Minister Sonowal in setting up the Sports University, which they felt "a long cherish dream is fulfilled". AOA secretary, Niranjan Saikia expressed his gratitude to Prof. Verma for taking charge as the Vice-Chancellor of the premier sports University in the state.
