2023 Meghalaya Assembly Elections: Conrad K. Sangma submits his candidature

2023 Meghalaya Assembly Elections: Conrad K. Sangma submits his candidature

Conrad K. Sangma, chief minister of Meghalaya and national head of the National People's Party (NPP), filed his candidature papers for the February 27 state assembly elections on Sunday.

In Tura, CM Conrad presented his nomination to the 51-South Tura Returning Officer and additional deputy commissioner Saljong R Marak.

Prior to submitting his nomination, the NPP leader, accompanied by his wife, paid a visit to the grave of his late father, former Chief Minister PA Sangma, at Tura to seek his blessings.

Conrad told reporters after submitting his nomination that the National People's Party is riding a positive wave and the opposition is disintegrating daily. "Therefore, given the current political climate, I see the NPP trending toward an absolute majority, and we are convinced that we will obtain it," he stated.

Concerning the issues on which the party will campaign in the upcoming election, he responded, "We are continuing the development work we have conducted over the past five years." "With the overall effort that has occurred in various areas and the fact that the foundation has been established, it is now time to move things to the next level, and continuity is essential to ensure that we will be able to reach our goals."

Conrad is running for re-election in South Tura, a seat he earned after being elected chief minister of Meghalaya in the constituency's August 2018 by-election. He received 13,656 votes and trounced his closest congressional opponent, Charlotte W. Momin, by more than 8,400 votes.

Previously, he served as the Member of Parliament for Tura (2016–2018). Conrad contested the by-election from Tura to the Lok Sabha in May 2016 and won by a record margin of 1.92 lakh votes after his father, the late PA Sangma, who was the sitting MP for the Tura constituency, passed away on March 4, 2016.

On March 6, 2018, he was sworn in as the chief minister of Meghalaya.

The last day to submit candidature papers for the 2023 Meghalaya Assembly elections is February 7. The nominations will be scrutinised on February 8, 2023, and the nomination withdrawal deadline is February 10, 2023. The election will be held on February 27, 2023, and the results will be announced on March 2, 2023.
