Guwahati: Two more residents of Meghalaya who had returned from Uttar Pradesh have tested positive for Covid-19 on Tuesday, taking the tally of cases to 30. While 17 cases are active in the state, 12 patients have been discharged after recovering. A lone patient, the first in the state, died from the respiratory illness.

"Both of them are under quarantine in Chibinang in West Garo Hills district", Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma said on Twitter.

Meghalaya had registered it's 28th Covid-19 case on Monday when a woman who had returned from Uttrakhand testing positive. "One more female who has returned recently from Uttarakhand was tested positive today which bring a total of 28 COVID-19 patients in the State. Twelve recovered, 1 deceased and 15 active cases," Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong informed. The Deputy Chief Minister said that the woman is from South West Garo Hills and she was already in the Corona Care Centre of the District.

It is pertinent to mention here that Meghalaya reported its first case on April 13, 2020. A complete curfew was also clamped in Shillong owing to the virus spread, bringing in a complete halt to activities in the capital. After a prolonged period of treatment, the last of the patients of this phase, a woman, recovered from the respiratory illness, and Meghalaya was officially declared "corona free". However, the joy was short-lived as Meghalaya again reported a new coronavirus disease (Covid-19) case on May 19, a day after 12th, and the last patient of the first cycle in the state recovered from the disease.

Meanwhile, the death toll due to Covid-19 has risen to 5,598 and the number of cases has climbed to 198,706 in the country. While the recovery rate in India is progressively increasing and has reached 48.19% amongst coronavirus patients, the health ministry said.
