Staff Correspondent

SHILLONG: During the last one week, the BSF seized 835 cattle, 26,500 kg onion and apprehended drug smugglers along with huge quantity of Yaba tablets and ganja. The total seizure was worth over Rs 3.2 crore along the international border with Meghalaya. These items were to be smuggled to Bangladesh. During the same period, the BSF also apprehended 33 miscreants involved in trans-border crimes. With increase in cattle smuggling, especially in East Khasi Hills and Jaintia Hills of Meghalaya, the BSF has intensified its vigil along the international border to curb the menace. The trucks loaded with cattle are transported undetected up to the international border with Meghalaya from different States of India.

Cattle smuggling is the root cause of all other trans border crimes but despite continuous efforts of the BSF to prevent the illegal cattle trade, it is a big challenge to completely halt the cattle smuggling from India into Bangladesh.
