Cattle Smuggling: Meghalaya Police Acting In Sync With BSF

Shillong: Meghalaya Police’s involvement in seizing cattle meant for smuggling to Bangladesh has helped the BSF along the Indo-Bangladesh border. In the past two months, cattle seizures were made by the West Jaintia Hills and East Jaintia Hill police in the hinterland before reaching the international border.

The Sentinel solicited the views of the BSF top brass on the issue which they have been dealing with all sorts of problems along the vulnerable unfenced stretch of the International border. The Deputy Inspector General of the BSF, UK Nayal said that the State police intervention has helped in many ways but there are also multiple reasons for the decline of cattle smuggling from the Meghalaya frontiers. “Firstly, Bangladesh has more than the requirements of cattle. Secondly, those into the meat business in the neighbouring country does not wish to pay the price as charged earlier by the smugglers and the third is that movement of cattle has drastically decreased after the boycott to acquire cattle heads from the market located in Khanapara”, Nayal said.

While the Khanapara market has reopened for butchers to procure the cattle heads, Nayal said, “Nothwistanding the reported opening of the cattle market, smuggling of cattle to Bangladesh has reached a new low.” The BSF however lamented that the cattle heads seized by its men are not auctioned at an appropriate period. “We are left with around 200 odd oxens that needs to be handed to the State police”, the DIG stated.
