SHILLONG: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma expressed his satisfaction at the progress of construction work of the new State Assembly building at Mawdiangdiang in New Shillong township. On Saturday, the Chief Minister made a surprise visit to the site to get a first hand account of the work executed by Rajkiya Nirman Nigam Ltd.

Commenting on construction work, the Chief Minister said, "The progress of the work is very well; the civil construction work is expected to be complete in 12 months and it will take another 12 months to complete the interiors". He also stated that, overall he is quite happy, a statement that is in sync with the Speaker of the State Legislative Assembly, Metbah Lyngdoh who visited the construction site one month back.

The sitting Meghalaya Legislative Assembly have been a temporary government structure since the massive inferno reduced the old heritage structure 19 years back. The plan to build a new complex was hanging fire for all those years due to persistent difference among members of the High Power Committee on the new site till they collectively agreed to construct at the 74 acres of land in the satellite township.

Going by sources who are monitoring and reviewing the progress of the work, the progress is in a good pace in spite of the hurdles of the lockdown. "If there are no further post- COVID impact, the structure will be in place by 2022," they stated.
