 Meghalaya Chief Minister, Conrad Sangma extended warm greetings to the people on the occasion of International Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples on Sunday, August 9.

Meghalaya CM Conrad Sangma shared a tweet in his official twitter handle quoting 'This International Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples, let's get together to celebrate, promote, and protect the unique culture, tales, and identities of the indigenous tribes residing across the #NorthEast and the country,' 

Notably, the International Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples is observed on 9 August each year.

This day is celebrated to raise awareness and protect the rights of the indigenous population of the word

It is to be mentioned that it is more important than ever to safeguard indigenous peoples and their knowledge.

As per reports, approximately 476 million Indigenous People are there across globe, in over 90 countries.

This indigenous people make up over 6 percent of the global population and 15 percent of the extreme poor.

Their territories are home to 80% of the world's biodiversity.
