COVID-19 impact: 12,400 students and professionals return to Meghalaya

SHILLONG: Altogether 12,400 of students and working professionals from outside Meghalaya have arrived in the State till late Wednesday evening. Meanwhile, the number of COVID cases in the State has risen to 31, said Health and Family Welfare Minister Alexander Hek while addressing the media here.

He said that the maximum number of positive cases are among returnees from different States. While 9,344 persons have undergone the COVID test, 8,993 have tested negative; and results of 320 tests are awaited.

Meanwhile, Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong said that the government has taken cognizance of the protest by NGOs towards the decision to allow highly-skilled workers to come into the State. "We appreciated their concern but our intention is to allow skilled workers of those trades which our own people cannot cater to."
