Curfew further relaxed, night curfew continues

Shillong, June 6: The District Magistrate, East Khasi Hills, has further eased the hours of curfew in the sensitive areas that witnessed five days of pitch battle between the police and the agitators, leading to normalcy limping back to the areas.

Situation was normal during the past 28 hours in the areas that witnessed havoc created by the stone pelters and persistent tear gas shelling by the police. It subsided on Monday evening, but the district administration refused to relax the curfew. However, on Wednesday, the district administration of East Khasi Hills issued a notification stating that curfew in areas under Lumdiengjri police station, that is, Jaiaw, Mawkhar, Umsohsun, Riatsamthiah, Wahingdoh, Mission, Mawprem, Lumdiengjri, Lamavilla, Qualapatty, Wahthapbru, Sunny Hill, Cantonment, Mawlong Hat including Cantonment Beat House areas (excluding localities beyond Umshyrpi bridge) has been relaxed for 7 hours tomorrow from 7.00 am to 2.00 pm and to be in force further from 2.00 pm till further orders.

The 6 pm to 6 am curfew in the rest of the city will continue because there has been no official notification to this effect. The Sentinel that toured the areas that has been worst hit by the violence found that all was calm during the five hours of curfew relaxation as well as during the curfew hours. However, there was maximum security at Mothphran Point and Umsohsun. Besides the state police and CRPF, the BSF and ITBP have also been deployed in several pockets.
