Cyber cell to crack on  mischief mongers: DGP

SHILLONG, June 18: Meghalaya Police’s cyber cell is going to crack against the mischief mongers by Tuesday after 20 days of tracking those involved in spreading fabricated/ false news through the social media. An incident at Punjabi Line in Shillong ignited the first spark and the news spread through social media adding fuel to the fire plunging half of Shillong into turmoil.

Curfew has to be imposed and internet has to be banned for 12 days. It was restored and suspended again due to the hate messages that have been spread.

On Monday, Meghalya Director General of Police (DGP) Swaraj Bir Singh, when asked by The Sentinel as to how the Police Cyber cell failed to check the social media mischief mongers, he said that the cyber cell has been strengthened and things pertaining to nabbing them will start by Tuesday. “Now, we’ve enhanced the man manpower and technical expertise in the cyber cell and those involved in inciting violence and hatred are already under our radar”, Sing stated, adding, “I’ll not reveal anything further on the operational details till Tuesday.”

Asked on elements who are already under the eyes of the law, the DGP reiterated that the police are on an active action mode to bring the alleged culprits into book.

On the law-and-order front that was triggered by a an incident that took a communal turn, the DGP said that the entire city is slowly limping back into normalcy. “However, we are making a strict vigil and also appeal to all citizens to cooperate with the law-enforcing agency,” he further said.
