Extension of Flood Relief Sought in Garo Hills, Meghalaya

SHILLONG: The Anti-Corruption and Human Development Organisation (ACHDO), an NGO from the plain belt region of Garo Hills has urged the Meghalaya government to sanction relief for seven more days to the flood-affected people.

“Water is started receding but not yet normalized and will take over a week. The people are still are there in relief camps,” the ACHDO said.

According to the organisation even after the water-level recede people will still not be able to earn a living immediately since they will have to be fix their houses.

People have lost paddy and cattle due to the floods even as the ACHDO asked the government to extend relief. According to the organization, during their visit to the flood affected areas they found out that cattle are not getting food even as it urged authorities to set up some sorts of temporary housing system for them.

It may be mentioned that most of the cattle and livestock in South West Garo Hills district have been rounded up and placed in a temporary enclosure in the AR College premises in Mahendraganj with veterinary teams monitoring the health condition of the animals to check for diseases.
