SHILLONG: Former Khasi Student Union (KSU) leader-turned-politician Hamlet Dohling on Friday condemned the brutal assault of Agnes Kharshiing and her team by unknown miscreants in Jaintia Hills on Thursday, adding that the police department must take up this matter seriously.

He also informed that discussions will be held with Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma and Home Minister James Sangma to make sure that such incidents never recur in the State. “The Law should be equal to everyone. Hence the Police should take quick action to find out and arrest the people involved in this brutal assault,” he said.

It may be mentioned that Kharshiing a frontline activist, who is fighting to safeguard the environment and was probing illegal mining in the State, and her companion were brutally assaulted by a group of trucks drivers and coal traders at Tuber Shohshrieh, East Jaintia Hills, on Thursday afternoon. Both were rushed to Ialong Hospital and later shifted to NEIGRIHMS with grievous head injuries.

Speaking to ‘The Sentinel’ after visiting the NEIGRIHMS hospital, Dohling said, “Such incidents should not happen again whereby a woman is being assaulted by many people. This is a cowardly act by those involved.”

He said social groups, activists, and NGOs play a vital role in society. However, when there are any differences there should always be dialogues to solve the problems and not through violence.

Dohling who is also the Urban Affairs Minister, said, “Poipynhun Majaw, the president of Jaintia Youth Federation (JYF), was also murdered earlier this year. He was also very much concerned about the preservation of the environment.”
