Huge cache of arms recovered in EGH

Shillong, May 23: In one of the biggest haul of arms stashed by slained Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) chief Sohan D Shira, police on Wednesday recovered the weapons from deep inside a jungle in East Garo Hills.

The forest was located in Dorengkigre and Bowegre villages and this is the seventh such instance of recovery of arms and ammunitions after the killing of Sohan in February.

According to police some of the weapons were buried while some others were hidden away under bushes. The weapons recovered included one .303 LMG, two AK rifles, one H&K rifle, four SBML barrels, five UBGL shells, five AK rifles magazines, two rockets (RPG), one 9mm magazine, one 9 mm carbine magazine, one remote control, one signal booster, 12 nos. of IED remote circuit, 30 nos. of AK rifle bullets, eight pistols, two kg of gelatine sticks, 66 nos. of electric detonators and seven cleaning rods.

Police also said that one of the AK rifle recovered may have been that of the police, which was probably snatched during an ambush on security forces. Meanwhile, East Garo Hills superintendent of police, Ringrang TG Momin informed that the search was carried out by the police with the help of the villagers. “Some of the weapons were recovered from such places which would have been difficult to retrieve without the help of the villagers,” Momin said.
