A REPORTER

SHILLONG: Independent Lok Sabha candidate from Shillong Parliamentary constituency THS Bonney supported by KHNAM’s Adelbert Nongrum, MLA of North Shillong constituency, received only 349 votes from the entire constituency of the MLA.

Initially, Bonney had filed his nomination as a KHNAM candidate. However as there are power tussles within the party, the Election Commission of India later allowed him to contest the polls as an Independent candidate. The total votes received by Bonney in the just concluded Lok Sabha elections totals 6,580 votes while BJP candidate Sanbor Shullai came in third with 76,683 vote.

Meanwhile, Dr Jemino Mawthoh — UDP candidate supported by MLAs within the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) which includes the UDP, the NPP, the HSPDP, and the PDF — had won in only two of 36 constituencies. These include Nongthymmai which is his own constituency and Khliehriat which is a constituency belonging to UDP MLA Kyrmen Shylla.

What is more interesting is that even in Shella constituency which is a bastion of Meghalaya Speaker and UDP State president Dr Donkupar Roy, Congress candidate Vincent H Pala managed to topple the UDP in terms of vote share.
