‘Jemimo Mawthoh will win’ says United Democratic Party (UDP) working president Bindo M Lanong

SHILLONG LS SEAT

A REPORTER

SHILLONG: United Democratic Party (UDP) working president Bindo M Lanong has stated that despite having to contest against both the Congress and the BJP from the Shillong Parliamentary seat for the Lok Sabha polls, he is confident of a positive result for Jemino Mawthoh – the common candidate of the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA).

It may be mentioned that Mawthoh is being supported by parties within the MDA, including the NPP, the HSPDP, the PDF and also Independent MLAs.

“It does not matter even if we (UDP) have to contest against the BJP or the Congress from the Shillong constituency because we are positive that the people will give their support to our candidate in the upcoming LS polls,” Lanong told The Sentinel.

He further said: “Even if the BJP has decided not to field a candidate, the UDP candidate backed by other political parties with the MDA coalition in the government will become victorious.”

He claimed, “We’ve four political parties (UDP, HSPDP, PDF and NPP) including Independent MLAs supporting Jemino Mawthoh. This time around we will also get the votes of Congress supporters because many are tired of Vincent H Pala (Congress’ candidate).”

“He (Pala) has represented Meghalaya in Parliament for the past 10 years and the people of the State are looking for a change,” he said. The UDP leader also accused the Congress candidate of not speaking out in Parliament against the

Citizenship Amendment Bill (CAB) 2016 and other issues affecting the people of the State.

Concerning the LS polls from the Tura Parliamentary seat, Lanong said, “The campaign of Mukul Sangma in Tura is affecting the Congress candidate from Shillong Parliamentary seat.”

He said, “Sangma has questioned as to what former NPP MP Agatha Sangma did as an MP. However, the same question should be asked about Vincent Pala as to what he has done as a representative of the people in Parliament in the past 10 years.”
