Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council Crisis Deepens, James Ban Basaiawmoit Claims Party’s Support

A REPORTER

SHILLONG: A few days after Grace Mary Kharpuri withdrew her support to the Parliamentary Party (PP) leader of the Peoples Democratic Front (PDF) in the KHADC, James Ban Basaiawmoit has stated that despite losing the support of Kharpuri he still has the confidence of the party.

Speaking to The Sentinel, Basaiawmoit said, “This is her (Grace) personal decision but despite what has happened the party and all the PDF Member of District Councils (MDCs) in the district council are supporting me.”

When asked, if this move made by Kharpuri will trigger an action from the party, he said, “This is not up to me and I don’t want to make any comments on this matter as the party has a committee to look into these things and the committee will decide.”

It may be mentioned that the MDC of People’s Democratic Front (PDF) Nongshken Constituency, Grace Mary Kharpuri has sent a letter withdrawing her support to James Ban Basaiawmoit as the Parliamentary Party leader of the PDF in KHADC.

PDF has 10 MDCs in KHADC with three of them supporting the Executive Committee (EC) of KHADC Chief Executive Member (CEM) HS Shylla.

“The reason why I withdrew my support is due to unavoidable circumstances as there is no understanding (within the party),” she said in the letter.

It may be noted that last week, five MDCs from PDF decided to extend their support to the EC of KHADC led by NPP MDC, HS Shylla.

The MDCs are Parliamentary Party (PP) leader of PDF, James Ban Basaiawmoit, Banteidor Lyngdoh, Hadrian Lyngdoh, Morningstar Mawsor and Arbinus Lyngdoh.
