SHILLONG: Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) CEM Teinwell Dkhar has assured that the matter concerning the demands made by the Synjuk Ki Nongsynshar Shnong Ka Nongthymmai Pyllun (SNSNP) will be taken up by the district council.

It may be mentioned that recently the SNSNP led by its president Bantylli Nari had even submitted a memorandum to Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma demanding amendment to the list of Scheduled Tribes/Castes in the Presidential Order 1950 removing some of the STs on the list which are not indigenous to the State.

In a function held recently in the city, the KHADC CEM lauded the efforts of the Synjuk for bringing up the subject which greatly concerns the interest of the indigenous community of the State.

He also said that there is a need to take responsibility for the safety and security of the indigenous community of Meghalaya.

“In other States our people are deprived of various benefits and are not even considered as scheduled tribes and this should change because this list should be amended,” he said while questioning on how other scheduled tribes from neighbouring States are enjoying the same benefits of the local indigenous people of Meghalaya.
