Latiplang Kharkongor may contest 2019 MDC polls as independent

SHILLONG: The Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) Executive Member in-charge of Mines and Minerals, Latiplang Kharkongor on Thursday said that he might contest the upcoming MDC election 2019 as an independent candidate.

It may be mentioned that Kharkongor is a member of the Peoples Democratic Front (PDF) led by its Chairman former KHADC CEM PN Syiem. However, recently the action of Kharkongor was called into question by the party as he allied with the new Executive Committee in the district council led by HS Shylla as the CEM under the new alliance the Khasi Hills Democratic Alliance (KHDA).

In this connection, three MDCs of the PDF, including Kharkongor, who had allied with the new alliance in the KHADC had been issued notices for anti party activity however till date no action has been taken against them. “I don’t want my principles to be undermined for the interest of the party or for any individual interest,” Kharkongor said.

Pointing out that the chairman of PDF PN Syiem had contested the MLA elections from Mawsynram constituency and finished second and later contested from Ranikor by-election and finished third, he said, “The PDF leader even forfeited his security at the recently concluded by-election at Ranikor and we have to question what will happen to the party if our chairman lose the election badly.” He said that the party had sought to take disciplinary action against him for allying with the KHDA in the district council however till date nothing has been done. “Disciplinary action should first be taken against our leader PN Syiem for his collapse in the recent by-election at Ranikor despite the party suggesting otherwise,” he said.
