Guwahati: A Covid-19 patient in Meghalaya has become the 13th person to make a recovery in the state after testing negative for the pathogen. With this, the number of active patients in the Northeastern state stands at 16.

"One returnee who was tested positive from West Garo Hills District on the 19th of May has recovered and has tested negative for COVID-19. The person had come from Tamil Nadu and has been under quarantine", Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma tweeted.

It is pertinent to mention here that two more residents of Meghalaya who had returned from Uttar Pradesh tested positive for Covid-19 on Tuesday, taking the tally of cases to 30. While 17 cases are active in the state, 12 patients have been discharged after recovering. A lone patient, the first in the state, died from the respiratory disease.

It is pertinent to mention here that Meghalaya reported its first case on April 13, 2020. A complete curfew was also clamped in Shillong owing to the virus spread, bringing in a complete halt to activities in the capital. Gradually, 12 more people -- the late index patient's relatives, employees, and friends -- were tested positive in quick succession, taking the tally of cases in the state to 13.

After a prolonged period of treatment, the last of the patients of this phase, a woman, recovered from the respiratory illness, and Meghalaya was officially declared "corona free". However, the joy was short-lived as Meghalaya again reported a new coronavirus disease (Covid-19) case on May 19, a day after 12th, and the last patient of the first cycle in the state recovered from the disease.

Meanwhile, India's tally of coronavirus cases has crossed two lakh after a record number of 8,909 people tested positive for the deadly virus infection in the last 24 hours. The total cases in the country stood at 2,07,615, including 5,815 deaths.
